Dualitas Struktur dan Agensi: Pengalaman Mahasiswa Laki-Laki dan Perempuan di Universitas Sains Cut Nyak Dhien Langsa

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how male and female students at Cut Nyak Dhien University (USCND) Langsa navigate campus cultural structures through their agency. The study is motivated by the phenomenon of gender participation inequality within student organizations and academic achievement. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach and Anthony Giddens' Structuration Theory as an analytical framework, the study involves 10 students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at USCND, selected via purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participant observation during July 2026. The study reveals three key findings. First, USCND's campus cultural structures continue to reproduce traditional gender norms through the division of roles within organizations and the control of female students' mobility. Second, male students demonstrate agency through the domination of public spaces and claims to leadership, whereas female students demonstrate agency through negotiation, the accumulation of administrative resources, and self-image management. Third, a dialectical process between structure and agency occurs, resulting in both the reproduction and the potential transformation of structures within the campus environment. These findings underscore the relevance of Giddens' concept of the "duality of structure" in understanding gender dynamics within higher education institutions.
